Women in Politics: A Comparison between Switzerland and Bangladesh

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and push for gender equality in political representation around the world. Both Switzerland and Bangladesh have made strides in promoting women's participation in politics, yet they face different challenges and have taken different approaches to address gender disparities in the political sphere. Switzerland, known for its direct democracy and stability, has been relatively slow in terms of gender parity in politics. While Switzerland was one of the last countries in Europe to grant women the right to vote in federal elections in 1971, progress has been made since then. Today, women hold around 30% of the seats in the Swiss Federal Assembly, marking a significant improvement compared to previous decades. However, women are still underrepresented in leadership positions, with only a small number serving as heads of government or major political parties. On the other hand, Bangladesh has made significant progress in promoting women's participation in politics. The country has had a female Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who has been serving since 2009 and previously from 1996 to 2001. Bangladesh also ranks higher than Switzerland in terms of women's representation in parliament, with women holding over 20% of the seats in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament). This progress can be attributed to various factors, including constitutional quotas for women in parliament and local government bodies, as well as grassroots initiatives that empower women to participate in decision-making processes. Despite the progress made in both countries, challenges remain in achieving full gender equality in politics. In Switzerland, cultural and societal norms still pose barriers to women's political participation, leading to slow progress in achieving gender balance in leadership roles. In Bangladesh, although there are quotas in place, there are still issues with the meaningful participation and empowerment of women in politics. Overall, the experiences of women in politics in Switzerland and Bangladesh highlight the importance of ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and empower women in positions of leadership. While progress has been made, there is still work to be done to ensure that women have equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes and contribute to shaping the future of their countries.
