Women in Politics: A Comparative Study of New Zealand and Bangladesh

In recent years, the representation of women in politics has been a major focus around the world. Both New Zealand and Bangladesh have made efforts to increase the participation of women in political decision-making processes. In this blog post, we will explore and compare the status of women in politics in these two countries. New Zealand has been a pioneer in women's political representation. In 1893, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant women the right to vote. Since then, the country has made significant progress in increasing the number of women in political leadership positions. Currently, women make up around 48% of the New Zealand Parliament, which is an impressive achievement compared to many other countries. In Bangladesh, the situation regarding women in politics is more complex. While the country has had a female Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who has served multiple terms, the overall representation of women in politics remains relatively low. In the last national elections, only about 21% of the seats in the Parliament were held by women. Despite this, Bangladesh has taken steps to increase women's participation in politics, such as implementing a quota system for women in local government bodies. Both New Zealand and Bangladesh face challenges in achieving gender equality in politics. Issues such as gender stereotypes, cultural norms, and lack of support networks can hinder women's political participation. However, the efforts made by both countries to address these challenges are commendable. In conclusion, the status of women in politics in New Zealand and Bangladesh reflects the progress and challenges faced by women in political leadership roles. While New Zealand has made significant strides towards achieving gender parity in politics, Bangladesh is making efforts to increase women's representation. By continuing to promote gender equality and support women in politics, both countries can create a more inclusive and diverse political landscape. Stay tuned for more updates on women in politics around the world!
